The gas leak alarm is a domestic appliance designed to produce an alarm if the flammable gas concentration in the air is detectable. This equipment was developed for Play Safe Gas Safe Pty Ltd, under the product name Smell AliveTM.
The alarm must sound before the gas conentration becomes an explosion or poisoning danger. The alarm requires no user intervention, it simply monitors the atmosphere and sounds an alarm when a danger is detected. This alarm is quivalent to a smoke alarm, but targeting gas leaks rather than fires.
Initially a research program was commenced in order to evaluate the current state of the market, and find competitors and potential competitors.
Development then commenced with sourcing a suitable gas sensor and evaluating its performance.
Once the performance was established and accepted, we began developing a design specification covering details such as:
- power supply requirements
- performance limits
- mechanical constraints
- legislative requirements
- user requirements
- manufacturing capabilities
The electronic design was developed and tested, and the concept proven to the client.
A proof of concept prototype was developed and demonstrated to stake holders.
The final design is now being finalised with a view to commencing compliance testing and production.

This system is now undergoing certification testing, and labelling and packaging are being developed. This product should be released on the Australian market in mid 2007.
